#WyrdAndWonder Top Ten Tuesday | Try a first sentence

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week you compile a list of ten books which coincide with that week’s theme. You can find everything you need to know about joining in here!

This week’s theme is ‘Book Quotes that Fit X Theme’ so, for the last week of Wyrd & Wonder (boohoo!), I’m taking inspiration from Malia @ BookParadise’s Try a Chapter Tag.

I’ve been very slumpy this year, and so far this month I’ve literally read one book, so I thought I’d share the first lines from some of the fantasy books on my TBR to see if any of them interest me enough to pick them up!

The police offer’s body goes blurry, then sharpens again.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

I shouldn’t have been surprised that fairies exist.

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko

Though nearly barren of water, the deserts of Akhia are a well-spring of secrets.

Turning Darkness into Light by Marie Brennan

The library at Osthorne Academy for Young Mages was silent save for the whisper of the books in the Theoretical Magic section.

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

Night fell as death rode into the Great Library of Summershall.

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

So far magic school was total rubbish.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

The beast raged; it punctured the air with its spite.

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

It is said, in Imardin, that the wind has a soul, and that it wails through the narrow city streets because it is grieved by what it finds there.

The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan

See this house perched not so far from the granite cliffs of Hob’s Head?

All the Murmuring Bones by A.G. Slatter

Zhongli village lay flattened under the sun like a defeated dog that has given up on finding shade.

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan

I love the first line of In Other Lands, but the opening lines that are intriguing me most at the moment are from Legendborn, Magic for Liars and All the Murmuring Bones. Let me know which one you think I should try this week, because I have no idea what I’m in the mood to read right now!

What did you talk about this week?

Umm… I LOVE this topic. I kind of want to just do a random post of first sentences on my TBR! Maybe it will help me really dive into books. Maybe I should do it like once a month because I’ve been TERRIBLE about reading the last few months! I read Sorcery of Thorns and really enjoyed that one!!

Ooh, this is a fun way to do this week’s prompt! There are a lot of books with great first lines. I agree that In Other Lands has such a great opening line. It’s one of those first lines that seems to set the tone for the story immediately!

This is a fun way of trying to pick your next read! I have to say I’m quite intrigued by the first line of The Magician’s Guild, I’ve been wondering if it’s worth reading for a while now.

But Legendborn is a fantastic read! It’s got a bit of everything in the best sort of way: mystery, magic, Arthurian mythology in the American south, dealing with grief, romance. I’d definitely recommend that one! But I also loved Raybearer and All the Murmuring Bones, though the latter is a little slower in pace, which isn’t bad but just depends what kind of story you want to read!
