You all know by now that I love being salty, so when I came across this tag, originally created by Nicole & Her Books, I knew I had to give it a go!
A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading?
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. So many people love this book and this series, or they say it’s worth getting through the first book to get to the better second book, and I just don’t care at all.
A classic book (or author) you don’t have any interest in reading?
I honestly could not care less about Great Expectations. I’ve read extracts from it at school and uni and been very bored. In fact, other than A Christmas Carol, I’m not a Dickens fan; I think his character names are brilliant and I usually enjoy adaptations of his books, but the books themselves send me to sleep and Pip is so annoying.
An author whose books you have no interest in reading?
Cassandra Clare. Again, I just don’t care. Part of that is simply that her books don’t appeal to me, but I have to admit that her fandom puts me off, too. If anyone dares suggest Clare’s books aren’t very good (in their opinion) an entire horde of fans will appear to tell them why they’re wrong and I don’t have the energy for that.
A problematic author whose books you have no interest in reading?
Orson Scott Card. Fuck that guy.
An author you have read a couple of books from and have decided their books are not for you?
Sadly, Nnedi Okorafor! For whatever reason her writing doesn’t click with me, which is a real shame.
A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into and couldn’t?
To be honest I’m not entirely sure if it counts as a genre, but literary fiction. Specifically the kind of literary fiction that makes you want to pour bleach in your eyes rather than read another page of aging men pursuing affairs with their students or child abuse or sexual assault. These are all important things to discuss, but it never feels like there’s any hope in literary fiction and, if you’re going to go to those dark places, I think a little hope is needed.
A book you have bought but will never read? (this can be a book you have unhauled/returned to the library unread)
I unhauled this one years ago now, but Past Perfect by Leila Sales, which I found second-hand. It’s a YA romance set at a Historical Colonial Village, which sounds so cute, but YA contemporary simply isn’t a genre I reach for often enough for it to take up space on my bookshelf.
A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started and have dnf’d?
I LOVED the first book in the Sevenwaters series, Daughter of the Forest, and then absolutely loathed the sequel, Son of the Shadows, so it’s a series I won’t be continuing.
A new release you have no interest in reading?
I’m sure I will get around to this book eventually, but I’m not all that bothered about How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories. I really like Cardan as a character, but I’d much rather follow some different characters in Holly Black’s fae world than return to the ones we already know.
I totally get fandoms ruining books for you. There are a few series that I wanted to read, but I was just so put off by the endless in fighting among fans that I lost interest. I am also not super eager for the new Holly Black book. Maybe the fandom ruined this new release for me as well.

I could give a lot of the same answers as you. Sarah J. Maas, Dickens, Cassandra Clare are all authors I’m not interested in, either. Nnedi Okorafor I’ve also tried a few times but couldn’t get into.

Great Expectations is one of my fave books but ‘Pip is so annoying’ made me laugh, it’s very true 😂🤦🏽♀️
Somehow I recently came across readwithcindy on YT and her reviews of the Courts of Thorns and Roses series are HILARIOUS and saves me from wondering what that whole series is about. Now I know, I too would put that on a list like this!

I read Great Expectations for school and I enjoyed it, but I TOTALLY get that it’s not everyone’s thing. And you are 100% correct, Pip is *so* annoying.

Ha! For the first half of your post it was like you were taking the tag for me, but I accept the challenge and I’ll give it a go in the new year (…I’m salty enough not to overlap too much I’m sure 😉
BUT OMG THANK YOU. I force-fed myself Great Expectations a few years ago (…well, shit. Over 10 years ago. Under 20 years ago) and ARGH NO just don’t do it to yourself. Pip doesn’t get less annoying. I’ve promised myself I never have to read Dickens again, but adaptations can be fun (I loved Armando Iannucci’s take on David Copperfield)
I feel far guiltier for not enjoying Nnedi Okorafor, but.. I don’t, and after 4 attempts I’m going to let myself off the hook and stop trying at this point.

I see Sarah J. Maas everywhere, yet I have no interest in reading her books! I read one Clare book, couldn’t really get into it, and never continued with the series. It makes me feel better that there are other readers who also don’t want to read these big names!

Thanks for the tag!!! I’m a Clare and Maas fan but totally get it. Some books aren’t the greatest and the fandom can be intense. I’m actually starting to feel that way about a lot of fandoms! Lol. Although, Crescent City is one of my favorites of the year! Such a great book that if you ever want to give Maas a try, do that one!

Oh my gosh! Your answers made me laugh! I agree with so many of them (Clare, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Dickens, literary fiction, especially the new Holly Black book).

I love Cassandra Clare and SJM but I understand why people don’t want to read their books. Not all books are for everyone. But I gotta say Crescent City is amazeballs. Just saying 😅

Yes on ACOTAR, and honestly Sarah J Maas in general. I kind of understand what you mean with Nnedi Okorafor. Binti and I did not gel at all. I do still want to give akata witch and who fears death a try so we’ll see.

I’ve heard enough good things about Crescent City to be convinced to give it a try at some point, but I’m not desperate to get to it and I know Maas’s YA definitely isn’t for me. I hope you enjoy Akata Witch more than I did!
