My Favourite Fictional Grandmothers

In honour of my Grandma, Edna, who lost her battle with COVID-19 last week, today I thought I’d share some of my favourite fictional grandmothers.

First, though, here’s my favourite gorgeous grandma on her wedding day, when she was just 19-years-old.

grandma

Miss you, Grandma. ❤

Grandmother from The Witches by Roald Dahl

The nameless narrator’s Norwegian, cigar-smoking grandmother is a retired witch-hunter, and a general badass. I haven’t read this book in so long, but it’s one of my favourite Roald Dahl stories and I loved the 1990 adaptation when I was little. I’ve heard there’s a new adaptation coming out this year and I’m quite excited to see Octavia Spencer step into Grandmother’s shoes.

Clarisse Renaldi from The Princess Diaries

I’ve never read the books, but I love this film and Julie Andrews is such a classy lady. I think what I love most about Clarisse is that this story is as much about her learning how to be a grandmother as it is about Mia learning what being a princess really means, and their relationship is just plain lovely.

tala

Tala from Moana

I love Moana, but I think my favourite thing about it is Moana’s relationship with her grandmother – not only because her grandmother’s so fun, but because she also acknowledges how unfair it is for there to be so much on Moana’s shoulders when she’s still so young. I treated myself to Disney+ recently so I might curl up with Moana soon.

Who are some of your favourite grandmothers in fiction?

I’m sorry for your loss and I send lots of love your way 🖤 You made a lovely post to honour her.
My favourite grandmother is the fearless grandma Kate from City of Beasts by Isabel Allende. She works as reporter for the National Geographic magizine and takes her grandson to the Amazon rainforest.
