In honour of my Grandma, Edna, who lost her battle with COVID-19 last week, today I thought I’d share some of my favourite fictional grandmothers.
First, though, here’s my favourite gorgeous grandma on her wedding day, when she was just 19-years-old.
Miss you, Grandma. ❤
Grandmother from The Witches by Roald Dahl
The nameless narrator’s Norwegian, cigar-smoking grandmother is a retired witch-hunter, and a general badass. I haven’t read this book in so long, but it’s one of my favourite Roald Dahl stories and I loved the 1990 adaptation when I was little. I’ve heard there’s a new adaptation coming out this year and I’m quite excited to see Octavia Spencer step into Grandmother’s shoes.
Clarisse Renaldi from The Princess Diaries
I’ve never read the books, but I love this film and Julie Andrews is such a classy lady. I think what I love most about Clarisse is that this story is as much about her learning how to be a grandmother as it is about Mia learning what being a princess really means, and their relationship is just plain lovely.
Tala from Moana
I love Moana, but I think my favourite thing about it is Moana’s relationship with her grandmother – not only because her grandmother’s so fun, but because she also acknowledges how unfair it is for there to be so much on Moana’s shoulders when she’s still so young. I treated myself to Disney+ recently so I might curl up with Moana soon.
