20 Fantasy novels I want to read in 2020

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and, if you don’t celebrate it, that you had a lovely Wednesday!

2020, eh? It doesn’t feel like a real date. It’s absolutely terrifying that, come October, it’ll be ten years since I started university. Where has that time gone?

On the other hand it’s going to be the ’20s again! Hopefully there won’t be a Great Depression and a rise in Fascism (I mean, hey, aren’t we already there?) but I am hoping flapper dresses might come back into fashion so I can justify wearing one to work.

Rambling aside, I’ve rediscovered my love for fantasy over the past couple of years, and it’s a love affair I want to continue. So what better way to do that than to list 20 fantasy books I’d like to be able to say I’ve read by the end of the new year?

Some of these books are newer releases and some are books that have been on my TBR for ages – let me know which one you think I should read first!

34606064._SY475_Jade City by Fonda Lee

Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for — and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion.

Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon’s bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation.

When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone — even foreigners — wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones — from their grandest patriarch to the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets — and of Kekon itself.

35068705The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang

When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.

34433755Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

In this richly developed fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards for an unknown fate still haunts her. Now, the guards are back and this time it’s Lei they’re after — the girl with the golden eyes whose rumored beauty has piqued the king’s interest.

Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learns the skills and charm that befit a king’s consort. There, she does the unthinkable — she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world’s entire way of life. Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she’s willing to go for justice and revenge.

I’m looking forward to Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri and The Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow – I’m sure I should be looking forward to some 2020 releases, but I’ve been so heads-down at work I’m not really sure what’s coming out!

I’m very excited for Red Seas! I think I might save it for the summer, though, simply because stories at sea are stories I always associate with warmer weather.

I just finished The Ten Thousand Doors of January and LOVED it, and I’d like to get to Tasha Suri soon; I feel like I’ve heard nothing but good things about her work lately. 🙂 I hope you enjoy both of those books!
