Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week you compile a list of ten books which coincide with that week’s theme. You can find everything you need to know about joining in here!

This week’s theme is all about the books on our summer TBR, so below are ten books I’m in the mood for right now!

As many of us do, I tend to gravitate towards books set in warm places or settings near the sea during the summer, and summer’s also the time of year I usually gravitate towards more contemporary reads or thrillers. I’m sure it’ll surprise no one that my TBR today mainly consists of fantasy, but a few non-SFF books have snuck on there…

These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch: I keep meaning to get to this YA Fantasy novel inspired by the Spanish Inquisition, and I know it includes a character who is a pirate. I’ve seen a few reviewers say they were disappointed that this book wasn’t more of a pirate romp, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it handles the more serious issues regarding religious intolerance.

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven: I read Draven’s Beauty and the Beast retelling, Entreat Me, earlier this year and really enjoyed it and I’m keen to read more of her work. This sounds like it’s set in a fantasy world inspired by the Roman Empire, and whenever I think of the Roman Empire I think of hot weather.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Moreno-Garcia is one of my favourite authors and I’ve been looking forward to her latest novel since it was announced. It’s due out in July, and I can’t wait to step into 1920s Mexico!

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty: This historical fantasy set between 18th century Cairo and the world of djinn sounds right up my street – I started it last year and liked what I read, but ended up getting distracted by something else so I’d like to give it another try this summer.

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan: Somehow I haven’t read this yet, even though it’s own voices Asian-inspired f/f fantasy? The sequel’s out this autumn, so I need to get to it soon!

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini: This book has been on my TBR for the longest time and it’s about time I read it, but I’ve been saving it for the summer months.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch: I feel like this book is constantly popping up on my TBR and somehow I never get round to it, but so far this year I’ve read and enjoyed Foundryside and The Brilliant Death so I’m in the mood for more Italian-inspired fantasy.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys: I haven’t read any of Ruta Sepetys’ work yet and I’ve been meaning to check her out for the longest time! When it comes to historical fiction I’m not usually drawn to fiction set during WW2, but I keep thinking about this novel so it’s about time I picked it up.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon: I’m determined to cross this book off my TBR this year!

Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager: I received an eARC of this novel through NetGalley that I should have read by now. I enjoyed Sager’s Final Girls, and this thriller is set at a summer camp so now is the perfect time to read it.

    Hallo, Hallo Jess,

    I spy some books we both share a common interest! Speaking of which, I talk about Fantasy Reads, my favourite INSPY readathon + why I’m launching my own readathon: #MyYASummer!

    I am quite the opposite – even though I do read Summery stories, my heart lies in Autumn + Winter; year-round as I live in a volcanic and oppressive humid clime. I loathe it. Truly. So whenever I can escape literarily to a better environ and climate, I’m overjoyed! lol So my seasonal TBRs are never truly focused on seasonally specific stories but I *can!* be a mood reader – so some stories just appeal to me at different seasons of the year.

    This Summer you’ll find that I’m in the mood for a heap of YA lovelies… lol

    The stories we share in common interest are:

    * Girls of Paper & Fire
    * PRIORY
    * Gods of Jade & Sorrow
    * City of Brass

    I’m hoping to put a dent into PRIORY this July; but if not, I’ll finish it during W&W Y3 lol – the others… unsure when I’ll get round to them. Some are avail on audio at my library so that’s a thought.

    Overall, love the focus and direction of your list! Its a genre I love myself… happy adventures!

      It sounds like you have a really fun summer of reading ahead, I hope you enjoy all of your books! 😀 Yes, I’m determined to get Priory under my belt this year, and I have the N.E.W.Ts Readathon to look forward to in August that should help me get more reading done if I don’t manage this TBR. I must admit I’m much more of an autumn/winter girl myself, but I’ve started to get better at enjoying the summer while it lasts!

        Hallo, again Jess,

        I’m hoping I will as well. This whole week has been one psychotic nightmare after another and I’ll be looking forward to just disappearing into some lovely stories and immersing myself into those worlds as a happy distraction!! I decided to re-join the Sunday Post this weekend… lol

        Looking forward to discussing PRIORY with you… and Louise convinced me to join NEWTs readathon – never heard of it and need to plan that out… lol So, it goes w/o saying I suppose I can add-on another readathon to July… still thinking about it but I might join it last minute.

        I can’t enjoy any part of Summer… the extremity of the heat/humidity really affects my health… Spring is worse on the level of the pollen invasion – so personally, the two seasons I feel most alive + content are Autumn & Winter. 🙂

    I really enjoyed Girls of Paper and Fire and The Lies of Locke Lamora. Salt to the Sea is so good as well. (I can’t say I enjoyed it because it’s sad historical fiction and I don’t know if ‘enjoy’ is the correct word to use. But it devastated me and I learned a lot about the setting and historic time period that I never knew before.)

      I’m glad you enjoyed all three of them! I’m certain Salt to the Sea is going to devastate me, too – I think the sadness factor is one of the reasons I don’t reach for WW2 era fiction all that much – but I’ve had a real craving for this one recently.

    I hope to get to priory, gods of jade and shadow and city of brass this summer too (though not all were on my tbr list this week haha). Locke Lamora is great, and I loved Foundryside too, so hopefully that will work out great for you too 😀

    I really hope you enjoy Salt to the Sea and The Priory of the Orange Tree! They were both really good! I also really enjoyed Ruta Sepetys’s other WWII book, Between Shades of Gray. Happy reading!

      Glad to hear you enjoyed them both! I’ve been meaning to try Ruta Sepetys’ work for years, so it’s about time I checked her out and I’ll definitely be reading Between Shades of Grey if I enjoy Salt to the Sea. 🙂

    There are a lot of books on your list I’ve wanted to read for a while too. I usually go for thrillers in the summer, which is what most of my TTT list consists of. Good luck on your tbr and happy reading!

    I haven’t read any of these yet either! I bought Locke Lamora YEARS ago and it sits on my shelf just looking at me. I really need to read it soon! I hope you enjoy all of these!
