Shelf Control is a weekly celebration of the unread books on our shelves created and hosted by Lisa @ Bookshelf Fantasies. Pick a book you own but haven’t read, write a post about it (suggestions: include what it’s about, why you want to read it, and when you got it), and link up! The Lie Tree
by Frances Hardinge
When Faith’s father is found dead under mysterious circumstances, she is determined to untangle the truth from the lies. Searching through his belongings for clues, she discovers a strange tree. A tree that feeds off whispered lies and bears fruit that reveals hidden secrets.
But as Faith’s untruths spiral out of control, she discovers that where lies seduce, truths shatter…
This book was everywhere around 3-4 years ago and I couldn’t resist this edition illustrated by the wonderful Chris Riddell, and then I just didn’t read it. I don’t know why, though, because I think it explores the relationship between faith and magic and science and I love books that explore those themes, so it’s about time I got to it! I think the hype has died down enough now for me to give it a try and enjoy it more, too.
Are there any hyped books you’ve been saving for when the hype train leaves the station?
This week I’m joining in with Lipsy @ Lipsyy Lost & Found to talk about the books I’ve been reading recently!
Now
I’m still reading Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest and so far I’m really enjoying it! Marillier’s writing is beautiful without feeling like I’m having to wade through metaphors and adjectives; I feel swept away by this story and it’s giving me those book tingles that have me hoping this is going to be a five star read. We’re in the final week of the O.W.Ls Readathon now and I want to get this book under my belt for History of Magic!
Then
I ended up finishing Roshani Chokshi’s The Gilded Wolves over the Easter weekend for Herbology – I visited my parents for the weekend in south Wales and the weather was lovely, so I read a lot in the garden which seemed pretty fitting! – and sadly I didn’t like it very much. Look out for my review on Friday!
Next
I have a lot of catching up to do for the Booktube SFF Awards and I’d love to tackle The Priory of the Orange Tree and a lot of the Asian-inspired and Italian-inspired fantasy on my shelves for Wyrd & Wonder, but right now I’m really in the mood for We Set the Dark On Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia. I haven’t read any dystopian fiction in years, but the fact that this has an f/f romance at its centre and it’s written by a Latinx author really make me want to read it. If I can read it before May it’ll count towards Transfiguration!
I was really excited about The Gilded Wolves when I first heard about it, but since then I’ve gone cold on it.

I think it’s one of those books that sadly got a lot of buzz all at once, but now it’s tailed off!

I find that people either really love The Gilded Wolves or don’t like it at all.

From the reviews I’ve seen I’d have to agree with you there!

The Lie Tree looks so good! I haven’t heard of it, but I loved Chris Riddell’s illustrations for Neverwhere, so I’m thinking I need this book in my life!

I will buy pretty much anything Chris Riddell illustrates! I have a copy of Matt Haig’s How to Stop Time illustrated by him and a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard illustrated by him and they’re both gorgeous. 😀

Thank you! It just wasn’t for me, sadly, but I understand why lots of people do love it. 🙂

I read another book by Frances Hardinge and didn’t care for it. The Lie Tree is still on my TBR but I’m hesitant about it.
I’m currently reading I am Not a Serial Killer. Super excited about it.

Ahh it always makes me hesitant to pick up a book if I’ve struggled with the author before! I am Not a Serial Killer has one hell of an intriguing title – I hope you enjoy it! 🙂
