This tag was created by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes, and when I discovered it I knew I had to have a go myself this festive season!
Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out:
Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill
I received Heart of Thorns in a Fairyloot box and even though it’s not the kind of book I would have gravitated towards if I’d seen it in a shop, I thought I’d give it a try because it had the potential to be a book I really enjoyed.
Parts of it I did like, but for the most part I just found it disappointing and a bit all over the place. Check out my review here!
Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone:
Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away
To be fair I don’t think this book is as popular now, but when the YA dystopian craze was around I read Legend and I thought it was so boring and I kept seeing it everywhere.
Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration:
Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)
I think I’m going to go with Snape for this one. He’s not exactly an all-out villain, but I’m a) never going to think his relationship with Lily was romantic, and b) never going to forgive him for the way he treated his students. Particularly my beloved Neville.
You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real:
Name a book you were spoiled for
In the end I’m glad I didn’t read Go Set a Watchman, I pre-ordered my copy before I heard about the controversy surrounding whether or not Harper Lee had actually wanted it to be published. My dad heard a review on the radio and mentioned to me that ‘so it turns out Atticus Finch is a racist in this one’ and the book was ruined for me. Atticus is the ultimate DILF. I’d much rather just stick with To Kill a Mockingbird.
It’s freezing outside:
Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with
I find Adelia from Ariana Franklin’s Mistress of the Art of Death series very difficult to relate to. She’s a doctor in the Middle Ages so she should be everything I want in a historical crime heroine, but so much of her story ends up revolving around her love for a man who doesn’t deserve her and I find it frustrating that while she’s always telling the reader how independent she is, her actions tell us differently.
Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ is playing and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings:
Name a couple you couldn’t stand
My apologies to Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight, but if she’s reading this then she knew this was coming: Katniss and Peeta.
I don’t like them as a couple. I don’t want Katniss to be with Gale, either. I actually wanted Katniss to end up on her own. That, to me, would have been a more realistic depiction of how people are damaged by war. I didn’t like the epilogue at all, I hated that Katniss seemed to have had children just because precious Peeta wanted them, and I hate how people are constantly hanging Peeta over Katniss’s head and saying she ‘doesn’t deserve him’.
I HATE IT.
I don’t hate Peeta, I just don’t like Peeta and Katniss as a romantic couple.
I also need to mention Avry and Kerrick from Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder. I don’t care that he later apologises for it, Kerrick backhands her across the face with enough force for her to fall over and they still become the romantic couple. Just no.
That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of:
Show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of
These are all books I do want to read, I’m just not feeling compelled to read right now. I’m very much a mood reader so books tend to stay on my shelves for a while, but one day I will give them a try and (hopefully) really enjoy them!
Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer:
Name a character death you are still mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)
***SPOILERS FOR PENNY DREADFUL***
I loved Penny Dreadful, and then the third season finale ended up being the most disappointing thing ever. Ethan never got to confront Victor about what he did to Brona, the whole storyline with Brona and Dorian Gray was ridiculous and then after everything she’s been through my beloved Vanessa was killed.
She deserved so much better – the show deserved so much better – and I’m still mad about it.
The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers:
Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long
100% Delirium by Lauren Oliver. I really enjoyed the first book and to this day I still think, even with that ending, it should have been a standalone. In fact it would have been far more powerful as a standalone.
Name a main character you HATE (No villains again!)
