I absolutely love the Books in the Freezer podcast, a podcast devoted to horror fiction, so when I saw they were hosting a readathon in October I had to join in – especially as I’m trying to incorporate more horror into my reading!
If you’re not already listening, go and check the podcast out here!
Read a Horror Book by a Female Author
I still need to get to Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant after I loved Rolling in the Deep, so it’s about time I got to it! Who doesn’t want to read a book about killer mermaids?
Read an Anthology or Short Story Collection
I’m going to go with Nightmare Magazine‘s Women Destroy Horror Special Issue, because I feel like I don’t know enough women who write horror and that’s a problem I want to fix. Also the cover of this issue really freaks me out – mushrooms give me the heebie jeebies.
Read a Horror Book with a POC or LGBTQ+ Main Character
I’m going to try both! Zombies are the supernatural creature that freak me out the most, but I’m not going to say no to a book that combines zombies with the American Civil War. I’ve heard Dread Nation‘s really fun, so I’m looking forward to getting to it. Camp Carnage is an indie novel I discovered via the podcast; it’s your typical summer camp slasher story, only this camp is a camp in which some LGBT+ teenagers have been sent by their parents to be ‘straightened’. Bleh.
Read a Horror Book That Has a Movie Adaptation
I want to try and read It before the next movie comes out, so we’ll see if I can get through some of this during the readathon…
Read a Book We’ve Recommended on the Podcast
My friend Marisa and I were already planning to buddy read Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt, so I think I’ll go with that one. This one sounds so creepy but so cool.
Are you joining in with this readathon?
Tee hee the name of this podcast/readathon delights me! I really want to read Into the Drowning Deep too! And Dread Nation is awesome, I hope you love it as much as I did! But the cover of the Nightmare Magazine? YEP all the nightmares for real! What IS THAT!? Good luck with the readathon!

I’ve listened to a couple episodes of the podcasts but it’s hard for me because I don’t read a lot of horror. This sounds like fun, though!
